Photographic film is a living, breathing, and ultimately decaying medium, particularly the cellulose nitrate and early cellulose acetate stocks from the early 20th century. “Early birds” — collectors who acquire these materials early to prevent deterioration — know that proper storage isn’t just about tidiness; it’s about preservation. Without the right environment, film quickly falls victim to vinegar syndrome, color fading, or brittle nitrate decomposition. The cardinal rule of film storage is “cool, dry, and dark.” Film is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. High heat accelerates chemical degradation, while high humidity encourages mold growth and the onset of vinegar syndrome (a process where acetate film releases acetic acid, turning the film into a brittle, pungent, and unusable mess). The ideal, accessible, and realistic environment for a home collector is a cool, dark room, with relative humidity (RH) ideally between 30% and 50% and temperatures below 70°F (21°C). For long-term preservation, lower temperatures and lower humidity are even better.
